PS5 Slim needs an Internet Connection to pair the Disc Drive

The new PlayStation 5 Slim model will require pairing through an internet connection with Sony’s servers to use the disc drive.

Bad news for the new PlayStation 5 Slim, it’ll need an internet connection to pair with the disc drive. Even the PlayStation 5 models that come with the disc drive attached, will still need to be paired to the disc drive. Why is that a problem? In the future when Sony’s servers go down, effectively every PS5 that hasn’t been opened yet to be paired, or any PS5 you want to replace the drive with will be paperweight. It makes the new optional detachable disc drive completely worthless for game system preservation in the long run.

The news was confirmed with the new PlayStation 5 Slim Call of Duty bundle that leaked online with said information planted on the box. Maybe this will become a non-issue by the time the servers go off, or maybe it could be fixed by a friendly neighborhood hacker by the time this does become an issue, but at the moment this is bad news for those without internet access.

Alan Wake 2 New Game+ to come later

Alan Wake 2 will have a New Game Plus mode sometime after launch.

Alan Wake 2 does not currently have a New Game+ mode but that will be changing. Remedy announced that the exact date is TBD but the mode will come to the game sometime after launch and listed off what this New Game+ will offer. When starting New Game+ you will retain all unlocked weapons and upgrades, and have access to a new Nightmare difficulty level and a new alternative narrative, which will include new Manuscript pages and new video content.

This reminds me of the first Alan Wake game that offered new pages for playing the game on the hardest difficulty. Overall this is welcomed news, and it sounds like on paper Alan Wake 2’s New Game+ could be one of the better ones that I’ve seen. There’s an actual initiative for you to want to replay the game a second time besides just wanting to replay. Was this the big DLC announcement Sam Lake was talking about? I guess depending on the alternative narrative this could be a big update, but we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, I can’t wait to see how Alan Wake 2 turns out. Stay in the loop for more Alan Wake 2 news!
