Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct Up Now!

Check out the latest Nintendo Direct focused on Mario Bros. Wonder characters and more!

In this direct, we find out about the playable characters, power-up details, new mechanics, and more! Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, Toadette, Green Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Light-Blue Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, and Nabbit are all playable characters! This marks the first mainline game where Daisy has been a playable character and hopefully, she becomes a recurring character in future mainline games.

Sadly those looking forward to playing as Yoshi or Nabbit have a drawback, as both of them are unable to be hurt and can’t use power-ups. It seems they serve as an easy mode of sorts. It's a real shame this isn’t a toggleable option because I was looking forward to Yoshi in Local Co-Op. Also, all characters outside of Yoshi and Nabbit play identically.

A bit of a letdown at first as a big fan of those abilities originally from Super Marios Bros. 2, but it seems this was to make way for the cool new badge system, which basically allows you to have one unique ability. These range from shooting grappling vines to safely bouncing off of lava pits, there’s a wide range of cool abilities available that’ll add replayability as you unlock more on your journey. Besides my little Yoshi nitpick, Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks to be the best 2D platformer of the year and I can’t wait to play it!

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor Performance Update

After months, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor finally gets some performance improvements.

Patch 7 for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor arrives today for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S.

  • Performance mode has been completely reworked to substantially improve player experience.
  • A number of GPU and CPU optimizations – along with disabling Ray Tracing – has resulted in a better player experience, including a solid 60 FPS in Performance mode.
  • Quality Mode has also received optimizations to help reduce FPS fluctuation and introduce other visual improvements.
  • Variable Refresh Rate support added for PS5.
  • Additional performance & optimization improvements for PC, including DLSS support.
  • Save system tweaks to help prevent save game corruption.
  • Fixed issues where players could not retrieve their XP after dying under certain circumstances.
  • Various crash fixes.
  • Various bug fixes & improvements across all platforms, including fixes for cloth, lighting, and UI.

It’ll be interesting to see how the game runs now and at what cost it took them to get there. It’s a shame console players paid 70 dollars plus tax to be playtesters, but it’s good to see console and PC players get a more stable performance out of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor.

Baldur's Gate 3 performance is a mixed bag on PS5

The performance mode on PlayStation 5 is far from perfect in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Despite the developers delaying the Series X/S versions of the game because of split-screen performance, it turns out that even on the PlayStation 5 there are performance issues. In performance mode, the game can drop as low as 30 fps in specific towns and has screen tearing. That being said the game does hit 60 fps in most areas, performance seems to be dependent on the area. Also, PlayStation 5 does offer VRR, which can help when the frame rate goes sub 60 to as low as 48 fps. Overall it’s not bad, but could use some work in some areas, maybe a patch in the future will fix said issues.

Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2023

Microsoft has announced that Xbox will once again be returning to the Tokyo Game Show.

Since 2020 Microsoft has continued to host an event at the Tokyo Game Show in Japan and it looks like this year will be no different. Xbox is planning to showcase a collection of games from not only Japanese creators but creators across Asia. They are also expected to give us “progress updates” from Xbox and Bethesda Softworks. Not exactly sure what this is about but it could possibly be related to what achievements Starfield has accomplished during its recent launch.

If it’s anything like last year's event, I expect a few more Japanese titles to be making their Game Pass debuts. Of course, I wouldn’t bet on any big announcements at the event but we could get new previews of already announced upcoming titles. If you’re interested in watching the event, it will streamed on September 21 at 5 am EST.
